Sutter Health Health Insurance Premiums Settlement

Sutter Health settled allegations that it forced upon Health Plans certain pricing and contractual terms that violated state and federal antitrust and unfair competition laws, causing the Health Plans to pay more than they otherwise would for Sutter's inpatient hospital services, which resulted in higher insurance premiums for Class Members whether or not they used Sutter hospitals. Sutter Health denies any wrongdoing and the court made no finding of liability.

A settlement resolving antitrust claims that Sutter Health's pricing and contract terms with health plans raised insurance premiums in Northern California. The claim filing deadline of September 12, 2025 has passed.

People who did not opt out of the Class and who paid any portion of a premium for a fully-insured health insurance policy from Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Health Net or United Healthcare at any time from January 1, 2011 through March 8, 2021, and who lived or worked — or, for employers and other group purchasers, had an office located — in one of the listed Northern California counties while paying those premiums.

How do you get paid?

The official site states that the Settlement provides $228.5 million to compensate Class Members who filed a valid and timely claim, and that a $228.5 million Settlement Fund will be established in exchange for the release of the Released Claims. It does not publish a per-person amount.
